How to Care for Your Window Tinting

So, you have just had professional window film installed at your home or office. The glare is gone, the heat is down, and your privacy has improved immediately. It is a fantastic investment that protects your furniture and lowers your energy bills.

Naturally, you want to keep it looking brand new for as long as possible. The good news is that high-quality window tint is low maintenance. You don’t need expensive equipment or hours of free time to look after it. However, because it is a specialised material, you do need to clean it differently than standard, bare glass.

Here is everything you need to know about caring for your new window tinting to ensure it lasts a lifetime.

1. The Waiting Game: The “Curing” Period

The first thing you need to know happens right after our team leaves. You might notice the windows look a little hazy, or you might see small water pockets (blisters) forming under the film.

Don’t panic! This is completely normal.

Window film is applied using a special mounting solution. Even though we squeegee most of the liquid out during installation, a tiny amount remains between the film and the glass. This liquid needs time to evaporate through the film, a process called “curing.”

Depending on the Sydney weather and the type of film used (thicker security films take longer), this can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

• Do not touch the bubbles. Poking them won’t help and might damage the film.

• Be patient. As the moisture evaporates, the film will flatten out and become crystal clear.

2. The Golden Rule: No Ammonia

When it is time to clean your windows, check the bottle of your cleaning spray. If it contains ammonia, throw it away or keep it for the bathroom tiles—do not use it on your tint.

Ammonia is the enemy of window film. Over time, it eats away at the scratch-resistant coating and attacks the adhesive layers. This is what causes old, cheap tint to turn purple and peel off.

What to use instead:

• Warm water with a drop of dish soap: This is actually the best cleaner you can use. It cuts through grease and fingerprints without harming the film.

• Ammonia-free glass cleaner: If you prefer a spray bottle, check the label to ensure it is safe for tinted windows.

3. Choose the Right Tools

Window film is durable, but it isn’t invincible. It has a scratch-resistant coating, but rough materials can still damage it over time.

Think of your tinted windows like a pair of expensive sunglasses. You wouldn’t scrub your sunglasses with a scourer, and you shouldn’t do it to your windows either.

• AVOID: Steel wool, green scrubbing pads, newspapers, or old rags that might have grit in them.

• USE: Soft microfibre cloths, chamois leathers, or a clean, soft rubber squeegee.

4. Cleaning Technique

When you are ready to clean, follow these simple steps for a streak-free finish:

1. Mist the window: Spray your soapy water mix lightly over the surface.

2. Wipe gently: Use your microfibre cloth or squeegee to wipe the dirt away. You don’t need to scrub hard.

3. Watch the edges: Be careful around the very edge of the window where the film meets the frame. You don’t want to catch your cloth on the edge of the film and lift it. Wipe parallel to the frame rather than across it.

4. Dry it off: Use a fresh, dry microfibre towel to remove any remaining water spots.

5. Managing Sticky Situations

If you have kids or pets, you might end up with sticky fingerprints or nose prints on the glass. If a regular wipe doesn’t remove it, don’t reach for a scraper or a blade.

Simply soak the spot with your soapy water solution and let it sit for a minute to soften the grime. Then, wipe it away with a soft cloth. Never use a razor blade on the film side of the window, as one slip will slice the tint.
